In honor of my VH1 debut coming up this Sunday- yes, shameless plug I know- I thought we’d take a look at a few real celebs who truly understand the gift of giving. It’s one thing to be a superstar and write a big check but it’s an entirely different bag of beans to actually get your hands dirty and play an active role in community work.
Lucky for me, great minds think alike and the celebs I love best are out there busting a move for the charities that mean the most to them. Let’s take a look at a few:
Kimora Lee Simmons
Featured on Black Celebrity Giving, Kimora Lee Simmons is on a roll making a difference for children nationwide.
Most recently Kimora partnered with Bounty’s “Make A Clean Difference” program and the TeacherWishList.com program to clean up school buildings and help provide teachers with the supplies they need. She’s also very active with Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation and the GEANCO Foundation. See, Kimora’s super fab in the philanthropic world too! Love her! Read more here.
Not only does Carrie belt out lyrics that make you want to love your man one minute and hate him the next, she puts her money where her mouth is through the CATS Foundation. On October 14th, 2011, Carrie showed up at 8:30am to build a playground in her Oklahoma hometown through a partnership with CATS and KaBOOM!, the national nonprofit organization dedicated to saving play- and my new employer! Yay DIY projects!…The build day wasn’t about photo opps for Carrie, she got down and dirty putting together equipment, painting murals and moving a bit of mulch too! Yes, Carrie!!! Read more about her playground build day here.
Lupe Fiasco & Common
Lupe and Common are two of Chicago’s finest! They shine just as much behind the camera as they do in front of it. I love these guys for their rhymes AND for how much they embrace their communities. The Lupe Fiasco Foundation goal is ‘to launch different initiatives to uplift the community from the education side to the hands-on side with…food drives and….annual coat drives’, as Lupe explains on BCG. Common’s Common Ground Foundation thrives in order to identify and develop tomorrow’s leaders through programs that promote holistic leadership and education. It is also committed to empowering youth to achieve greatness while developing leadership and life skills needed to fulfill their dreams and make an impact on their world.(source) Read more about The Lupe Fiasco Foundation here and more on The Common Ground Foundation here.
Now who does not love Miss Jill?!? Honey! With her kind spirit and strong presence, it’s no surprise that Jill also makes time for her hometown of North Philly, PA. What started off as a scholarship foundation, Blues Babe now offers financial support and mentoring for students that have shown the aptitude and commitment to their education, but whose families may not have the resources to ensure completion of their undergraduate degrees. We also engage students in grades 6 – 12 through programs such as Camp Jill Scott and Clean Up Your Neighborhood.(source) Yas, Jilly from Philly, teach the babies! Read more about Blues Babe here.
So there you have it, real celebs doing real (important) things! Check out many more stars on Black Celebrity Giving……and Don’t forget to watch my episode of Why Am I Still Single this Sunday on VH1 at 9pm EST. I know, I’m not a REAL celeb but Friends of Ebonie gets a few plugs and I’m representing for all the single, do-gooders out there! YAY! 🙂
